Sean Kerr, WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Ghost in the Machine, Newcall Project, Auckland, 8-25 April

Handmade kinetic object, inflatable, camera sensors, local area network and audio.

Auckland-based new media artist Sean Kerr presents WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! investigates punk ideology- Do It Yourself strategy, Lo Fi, the unconventional and the notion of being an individual.

This project makes use of obsolete technologies, found objects and an inflatable. Each element or mechanism is seeking to communicate with the other in the room via a local area computer network. Based on the metaphor of the social networking website and using hand-crafted mechanisms to "make things weird", the interaction between you, the viewer, and technology becomes about both creating chaos and trying to find the meaning within it.

Working with his audience by working against them, Kerr convincingly short circuits our expectations of the stimulating and enlightening interactions we might seek to have with art works. Playing off against our deference for decorum and the expected order of things, the catalytic and bafflingly banal mechanisms É play with our understandings of 'self', 'art' and the social architecture that supports both these constructs.
