Two exhibitions at Te Manawa - Peter Siddell and Montana: Two Visions
by Christopher Harrod

May 2004

Peter Siddell: Landscape 7 February - 18 April 2004

Peter Siddell, an Aucklander by birth and lifetime residence, has exhibited a series of paintings, allegorically about New Zealand landscape. From representative images of the Mangaweka Gorge to many images of the Auckland west coast (From Karekare to Whatipu). Drawing on personal memories and photographs from his days as a climber, Siddell treats us to images of the New Zealand landscape that owe as much to his internal landscape as they do to landforms. Riots of greens and browns, and pleasant curved landforms, delicious enough to eat.

Montana: Two Visions 27 March - 30 May 2004

This exhibition hails from Palmerston North's sister city, Missoula, Montana and features modern works, both from the indian perspective, and that of the European settlers of the region. Thus paintings of cowboys jostle with modern interpretive indian sculpture, photographs of rodeos rest beside woven bead purses and photo essays on 'grandfather stones'. An exciting mixed media essay on a mid American region, physically distant, and yet sharing New Zealand's concerns and feelings on bi-culturalism.
