Aucklanders and the arts
Results have just been released from a 2008 Creative New Zealand survey about New Zealanders' attitudes, attendance and participation in the arts.
Local results indicate Aucklanders are supportive of the arts and think they help define who we are as New Zealanders.
Eighty per cent of Aucklanders think the arts should receive public funding and three quarters agree their local council should financially support the arts.
Results for Auckland also showed:
Aucklanders regularly attend arts events and embrace new technologies to access information and engage
Aucklanders participate in the arts, especially in the areas of visual arts and film, performing arts and Pacific arts
Cultural festivals and events appear to be increasingly important to Aucklanders and make them feel proud to be an Aucklander
Major cultural institutions, facilities and venues are most important as contributors to Auckland being a world-class city.
Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee deputy chairperson, Councillor Toni Millar is pleased Aucklanders see the arts as important.
"It's super to see so many of our citizens attending and participating in arts related activities," she says. "As well as this, I must acknowledge the key role the council plays in delivering and supporting events, and contributing to major facilities, venues and cultural institutions which help Aucklanders feel proud of their city."
The 2008 results were compared with benchmark data gathered in 2005. This allows the measurement of changes in attitudes, attendance and participation over time and will inform the development of Creative New Zealand's policy and implementation of strategic initiatives including advocacy in the arts.
